Let's see, There are about 2 million of us … US expats living here in Mexico. primary would be - we can live on social security here. I live on about 50% of my monthly social security here. Next, we get free medical care from the Mexican government - we pay no taxes, except on the houses or property we own. I have a beautiful home with sculptured rose gardens, fountain and jacuzzi and my annual property tax bill is $63 US - I don’t know anywhere in the US where the property taxes are that low. The cost of living is cheap. to get land line phone, high speed internet, and satellite TV - all 3 is about $55 a month. Electricity for all day use of TV and fans, and everything (no a/c is needed) is about $30 a month, gas for cooking about $8, or gas for cooking and hot water is about $12 a month (I have solar hot water, no monthly cost), water is about $50 a year, food is fresh and organic and from farms nearby, right now oranges are about 15 cents a pound, fresh meat and poultry and fish is available and fair priced, gasoline for the car is competitive with the US … I just bought a new nissan for a family member … cost was under $8,000US. Movies at theatres are about $3 for a new release, restaurants: 5 star restaurants start at under $10 a meal, for chateaubriand dinner. There are a ton of activities here, ancient ruins to investigate, no harrassment by police to meet quotas, no parking tickets, car insurance where I live for minimum coverage is $35 a year. Americans here are happy as can be, Mexican people treat them well and are always smiling. There are groups of American expats in major cities, there are support clubs - like the Lake Chapala Society that helps people settle in - … Medical and hospital and medications are free. Doctors take their time with you - it’s not a 5 minute wink and smile and $125 fee … if you don’t have coverage, doctor fees are from $1.75 for an office visit to about $40 for a specialist. Everything about Mexico is fairly priced and services performed in loving ways. Our plumber and electrician charge $10 US per hour maximum. I have saved a small fortune in my 18 years here and live very well … I would never return to the US - period.
